Analysis of youth in the three Grand Tours in 2023
In recent years, enormous talents have emerged and appear to win competitions at a very young age. Among these cases are Remco Evenepoel, João Almeida, Tadej Pogacar among others.
This article aims to understand the number of young people who are included in the teams starting for the different grand tours in 2023, as well as their impact on the races.
In this way, the three Grand Tours were analyzed (Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and La Vuelta).
At the start of each Grand Tour, there were 176 cyclists. Of these 176, there were 46 young cyclists in the Giro d'Italia, 30 young cyclists in the Tour de France and 56 young cyclists in the La Vuelta.

Total athletes | 176 | 176 | 176 |
Young | 46 | 30 | 56 |
Percentage of young | 26.1% | 17.1% | 31.8% |
However, this analysis does not stop here. It was consequently analyzed how many young cyclists finished the three Grand Tours and the number was high.
| Giro d'Italia | Tour de France | La Vuelta |
Total athletes | 125 | 150 | 148 |
Young | 43 | 27 | 46 |
Percentage of young | 34.4% | 18% | 31.1% |
Conclusions
It is clear from this year's data that the La Vuelta was the one with the highest number of young people, followed by the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. This is normal, since it is the last Grand Tour of the year, and where teams try to test new cyclists for the coming years.
Something important was the percentage of young cyclists who finished the Grand Tours. Reading this data allows us to verify that young cyclists can be placed for three weeks, as gregarious or having a role in fighting for secondary classifications.
